latest gallup poll gives him an edge over obama, a little more than two weeks before election day. you know just about every day we see a variety of polls showing one candidate leading, the other trailing. if you really want to go beyond the numbers you might want to handicap the race with some very unscientific indicators. reporter explains. >> one poll shows romney up by six. another shows romney up in a couple battleground states. could the key actually be predicted? >> maybe not the goblin that has show up the door but this measure has been out of the four elections and right now obama mats are out selling them by 30%. a school magazine let's students vote based on the last

he is doing so as he visits churches on both sides of the bay. around 10:30 he'll be in san francisco for the 160th anniversary service on baptist church on mccallister street. then he is going to visit another church on 66th avenue. yesterday they joined the governor in san francisco showing support for his proposition 30. it would raise taxes on high income households to support schools and education programs. >> i say proposition 30 is about jobs, it's about kid and teachers and they produced the brains and skills that make the jobs of the future possible. >> terry: competing schools spending measure is prop 38. the governor and teachers union are campaigning against another measure, prop 32 which they say will limit teachers

participation in the political process. if you work for the state of california, recession may not have hurt you too badly, not in terms of your salary. a new study reveals state employees have fared much better in the paycheck department than workers in the private sector. nannette miranda reports from sack to. >> a new center for government analysis shows a big discrepancy in paychecks. when you compare state workers versus californians on a per capita basis. including pensions were roughly $56,000 a year back in 2005. it judged to $80,000 five years later. a difference of 23%. for the rest of californians, personal per capp that income was almost $39,000 a year, increasing to more than $42,000. a jump of only 10% during the same time period. the taxpayers foundation called

the numbers a dangerous compensation trend. >> it's demonstrating how california misspent money. state employees have received compensation increases not found in the private sector. that is one of the reasons we find ourselves in deficit situations. >> the report concluded had the public sector grew at the same rate, the state of california would have saved $2.1 billion enough to add 231,000 teachers. >> they say they pointed out per capita income which includes every californians yan people including people not working and highly paid university executives. they also say the average stated worker has taken numerous pay cuts, purchase lows and pension reductions since the

>> carolyn: good news about the environment this morning. river otters had almost completely vanished from the bay area but now they are making a comeback. dan ashley has this morning's assignment 7 report. >> 7:00 a.m. in the marin headlands, perfect time for a

family swim. this is lagoon where volunteers are looking on the ters. >> so far i've seen them every time i've been out here. >> they need fresh water to survive they do go into salt water occasionally. river otters used to live in every creek in the bay area but they disappeared. >> because of hunting and trapping but because a lot of watersheds were in terrible disrepair. >> reporter: this map shows the known otter territory in 1995. noticed almost no otters in the bay area. years of work to clean waterways appear to be paying off. on the ters are back. >> all on the ters look really healthy. >> she is a naturalist who helped launch the project. >> it turns out there is almost nothing known about their populations or ranges.

>> she and other volunteers are combing the bay area looking for evidence to add to local otter science. >> there a little tail going in there. >> they post photos on website and interactive map shows the locations of more than 150 otters spotted around the bay area in the last year. on the ter ecology project set up motion activated cameras to catch otters in action when people aren't around during the day and at night. they spend quite a bit of time on land. they like to play, but they are not always good at sharing. one volunteer caught this video of an otter stealing a fish. cute as these animals are, they have a strong bite. don't get too close to them. even so for people who do this otter stalking get hooblgd on it. >> i can't help it. they are really cool. >> a biology research and otter

keeper at zoo and andrea workers with the otters at the oakland zoo. they get paid to take care on the ters in captivity they choose to spend their time searching for wild otters. >> this is exactly what i was interested in but i didn't have the means or ability to do it on my own. >> with a small amount of training anyone can join the team. they search for clues indicating how the animals use their habitat. otters have big webbed feet. >> come closer, you can see a perfect animal trail going up there. if you were able to be an animal and scoot through hole and up the hill you would find a whole bunch of trails like this. >> there are probably several animals using this hillside. beare looking on the ter poop.

from vollmer peak. clouds will continue to thicken. live doppler 7-hd. there you see the sweep on top of mount st. helena. it will be picking up moisture in the next 12 hours or so as the system develops to the north of us. actual frontal passage will be coming through. unfortunately for your monday morning commute. mid 50s for san francisco and oakland. still cool numbers, los gatos and san jose, nine degrees cooler this morning. also north end of the bay, it's been a chilly start for santa rosa. mostly cloudy conditions and clouds will thicken throughout the day. rain and wind arrive tomorrow but a few light sprinkles throughout the evening hours. upper-level low, once it moves to the north around east it's going to stay there for the next several days.

that is going to spin in a little bit more rainfall tuesday into wednesday. we will call it cool and unsettled with the biggest punch most precipitation coming in tomorrow morning. then just a little bit more widely scattered throughout the latter part of the day on monday and tuesday. few showers are possible later on this evening but there is main frontal band. you notice not until about 6:00, 7:00 passes through the north bay. it will take 9:00 to sewing, maybe trace amounts or quarter of an inch at the most in the south bay. elsewhere, half inch to three-quarters of an inch. today we're dry and breezy south winds up to 15 miles an hour. just typical sea breeze right now but with the front we could see them gust to over 30 miles an hour. notice the narrow temperature range from low to mid 60s

coastside to upper 60s to around 70 today. right now, sunshine around monterey and 65 a little bit later on. we are looking at a cloudier day today. at&t park, mid 60s and winds will be typical. it will be cool. bundle up. numbers will drop to the upper 50s and tomorrow it will feel like winter as temperatures barely in the 60s. it's going to be a rainy start and midday and scattered showers monday, chance tuesday and wednesday and then we're looking at drier and warmer conditions for the rest of the week. >> carolyn: don't you mess up those giants. >> no. >> a social media is playing a big role this election season. one of the players is mountain view based linked and technology

school in city's telegraph hill north beach area. >> san jose earthquakes hope their fans will help them set a new world record this morning. the team and fans think they can break the record for the number of people taking part in a groundbreaking. the earthquakes will break ground for their new stadium at 11:30 this morning. current record stands at 4,532 people. the earthquakes are encouraging fans to bring their own shovels so they can carve out a new spot for the world records. they need over 4,000 people. this comes as the earthquakes just clinched home field advantage for the playoffs. no rain to turn that ground into mud. >> and tomorrow afternoon it will be happening. today we are dry but we have a cold front bringing pretty good rain through the early afternoon. especially in the north bay, half an inch to three-quarters
